Notes From the Field...

Notes from the field... (explained)

Maybe (just maybe) there is a method to my madness!

One of my favorite all-time quotes...

is from Massimo Vignelli when he said “The life of a designer is a life of fight. Fight against the ugliness. Just like a doctor fights against disease. For us, the visual disease is what we have around, and what we try to do is cure it somehow with design.” I think the reason I love this quote so much is that long before I ever heard it, I had already enlisted in the war and was fully committed to living every day in the pursuit of beauty!

I LOVE Beautiful things!I know a lot of people will say that, but for me it goes a little deeper. I can visually pull apart what makes a design work so beautifully and I truly appreciate all the brilliance that went into creating it. I often get flack for spending SO much time on tiny little details, but the great designers of our time like Giorgio Armani and Christian Dior were adamant that all great design lies in the attention to detail. Also, I have never had a friend or client say "I just wish you hadn't spent so much time and effort making this so beautiful, I really wanted something less pretty!"

I won't lie...sometime's it is a sacrifice on my part to devote so much time and effort to each and every project wether it is a paid or volunteer gig. For the eternal perfectionist, the pursuit of beauty can be all consuming at times. But, at the end of the day, I am a people person which makes me fiercely addicted to the result. I love how making something look beautiful can effect the way someone will feel. We are programed to light up when something is done for us, and even more so, if it is done well. It conveys a level of caring about the job or the client, that makes them feel special and happy - and after all, isn't that what good design should do?
